It serves working families and/or parents with special needs who desire both parochial school education and supplementary day care in a Catholic environment for children enrolled in Saint Charles Borromeo School in grades kindergarten through eighth.
The CARES Program is staffed by an experienced director and a number of devoted and committed teachers/teacher aides. These professionals, work together to help each child grow in maturity and self-respect as well as to maintain an atmosphere wherein respect and understanding for others is realized. All teachers and teacher aides receive a professional growth evaluation which is reviewed yearly by the Office of Catholic Education.

EMERGENCY (DAILY) ADD-ONS
Children may be added to the C.A.R.E.S. list on a daily basis in case of emergency. Please call the school office, or school nurse to add your students to the C.A.R.E.S. list for that day. DO NOT leave a message. You must speak to a school representative in order to add your child to the daily C.A.R.E.S. roster. At this time make sure to leave a contact phone number for the C.A.R.E.S. teachers. They will contact you when your child arrives at the C.A.R.E.S. program that day.Payment for that day’s add on services must be provided on pick up.
Parents are expected to call the C.A.R.E.S. program if you will be picking up after the scheduled time. Teachers will inform your child that you will be late. Important Parental Responsibilities
EMERGENCIES + SAFETY
With the children's safety and well-being in mind, it is MOST IMPORTANT that each child's parent complete an Emergency Form and then adhere to the instructions given. One of the most important regulations concerns the child's leaving the premises of the CARES Program. Parents or guardians may not take children from the school yard or other areas without notifying the CARES Program staff and signing out the child. CARES Program Staff will not permit children to leave the program with anyone whose authorization is not on the Emergency Form. Please refer to the CARES handbook for more details on this policy.
EXPECTATIONS FOR CHILDREN'S BEHAVIOR
As members of a caring community, the children will be expected to respect the staff, each other, and the materials and environment provided. Children may never leave the building or grounds without explicit permission of the staff of the CARES Program. Such permission will only be granted by written order of the parent or guardian.
In order to maintain a professional atmosphere, we ask that all staff members be formally addressed as adults--that is, "Mrs. White, Mr. Jones, or Miss Smith." Informal use of staff members' first names by students or parents is inappropriate in the school setting.
Any child who does not conform to the set rules and regulations of the CARES Program is liable for dismissal from the program. The child of any parent or guardian who does not honor the rules and regulations of the CARES Program is liable for dismissal from the program.
TOYS FROM HOME
The CARES staff discourages toys brought from home because they cannot be responsible for those lost or broken. In addition, there is no place to store these toys during the school day while your child is in class. The CARES Program has a wide assortment of games, toys, and crafts that are available to all children in the program.
Children should bring their own snack and drink to CARES. Snacks and drinks will not be provided by the CARES staff. Please have the snack/drink in a separate bag from their lunch. When they arrive at CARES all students will eat their snack before doing homework or other afternoon activities. A juice box or pouch would be the easiest option for a drink, however there is a water fountain in the CARES classroom.
Children may bring a change of clothing for participation in the CARES Program, but the CARES staff cannot be responsible for school clothing or play clothing. Please instruct you child as to the care and placement of their clothing so that no items are lost or misplaced.
A scheduled homework period with a teacher/aide will be provided. It is the child's responsibility to have his/her assignments and books. Children may not go back to their classrooms to get these items. Parents are responsible for checking the child's homework before the child returns to school on the next school day.
If a parent knows in advance that a child will be absent from the CARES Program on a day when the child is registered to attend or for any amount of time, the parent must notify the school nurse when he/she calls in the morning to notify the nurse of the child's absence.
If a parent takes the child for an early dismissal for any reason on a day when the child is registered to attend the CARES Program, he/she must notify the nurse so she in turn will notify the CARES staff that the child will not be present on that particular day.
It is most essential that the lines of communication between parent, school, and CARES staff be kept open for the safety and welfare of each student enrolled in the CARES Program.
ILLNESS OR ACCIDENT
In cases which appear minor, the teacher will make the student comfortable until a parent arrives to pick up the child. At this time the parent will be not)notified of the illness or accident and the follow-up care given.
In cases which appear serious, the teacher will make an effort to carry out the instructions as given on the Emergency Form on file.
Parents who do not wish their child treated in any way should indicate such on the Emergency Form and should give directions to be followed in the space marked "Special Instructions."
If the parent does not supply adequate emergency instructions, or if the instructions given cannot be followed at the time of the emergency, the CARES staff will act according to their best judgment for the welfare of the child.
Emergency closings due to a weather emergency or another emergency will be at the discretion of the principal. Parents will be contacted by telephone. Parents will be given ample time to pick up their children or to contact another person listed on the child's Emergency Form to pick up the child. If the CARES Program is closed for any emergency, registration fee paid for the unused hour(s) for the CARES Program on that day will be deducted from the next registration fee for your child.
