Welcome back to a new school year! The 7th and 8th graders are back into the routine of Middle School, and the 6th graders are adjusting well to their new schedule. In all three science classes, we reviewed the steps of scientific inquiry and applied these steps to our experiments. We also discussed the technology design process and used the steps in our first STEM activity. The topics we will be covering in each grade include the areas of physical, life, and earth sciences.
In religion class, the 6th grade will study the Old Testament. We began the year by discussing how God reveals Himself to us through Jesus, the Scriptures, and creation. We are becoming experts in locating Scripture passages in the Bible. We will continue our “Virtue of the Month” beginning with the virtue of “work.” Through class discussions, stories from The Book of Virtues, and various activities, students are encouraged to apply their best efforts in all areas of their lives.
The 8th grade ELA (English Language Arts) curriculum includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Grammar and vocabulary skills are practiced daily. ELA class begins with a journal prompt, quick write, or Every Day Edit. We are presently reading short stories and practicing our summarizing skills.
Our first novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton is always a class favorite. Students will be introduced to new books every Friday with First Chapter Friday. We recently finished our first free verse poem titled “My Life in 30 Words.” The students discovered how difficult it can be to describe themselves in exactly 30 words!
8th grade is an exciting year at St. Charles. Some events that the students are anticipating are the Beta Club elections, T-Shirt signing, the Reindeer Dance, Catholic Schools Week, Living Stations, and Graduation. The students will receive the sacrament of Confirmation in March. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue their preparation this school year. Thank you to the entire parish community for your support of our school. We are truly grateful!
